My mom's 323i 5-speed gets ridiculously good mileage. When I drive that car I average 20% better economy than either my M3 or 325iS (which get about the same).

A manual 323iT (not quite easy to come by, yet sometimes more prevalent than 325iT manuals even despite the disparity in vehicle production numbers) will yield 21 mpg with a rating of 18 mpg on the street and 26 mpg on the highway.

An XiT model will net similar overall mpg results with only a decrease of about two mpg on the highway for both auto and manual.

A 330 Sedan or Coupe (no wagon offerings for the 330 M54) will yield an increase of 1 mpg overall in automatic form and equal the overall mpg from a manual 323iT in manual form (My personal experience with an auto 330i sedan is that of about 20.7 mpg achieved overall).

The mileage would not be what I consider as "poor", however it is not econobox great. Later production 325i's (wagon and sedan) were also equipped with the SULEV straight six which emits very little out the rear (comparable to a Prius from what I have seen). This way you can have the piece of mind of knowing that you have minimized your carbon foot print, all the while running over said Hippies on your way to Hockey practice. This is a two fold return for the planet.

              ^Thats pretty good for a e46.

My 330ci manual gets about 27 overall, 80% highway and 20% city as well. Can get 30 if taking it easy on highway.
