    Sales Tax NY

    Hey guys,

If I buy a used car in the state of NY, do I pay tax at the time of purchase to NY?

In NH (only other state I have bought in) I pay tax at registration in VT @ 6%.

If I have to pay two state taxes I will pass on a deal.

    Thanks

Shouldn't have to pay NY sales tax since you are not a resident. At least that's the way it is in Louisiana if you are a non resident.

Things may be very different in your state, but here in Mississippi if you buy a car 10 years or older from an individual you don't pay sales tax when you register it. So if your state has similar laws and you are buying an older car, you might not pay any tax at all.

9 times out of 10, you pay for the sales tax in the state that you register the car in; not when you buy the actual car. If you live in vermont, then when you go to register the car, you have to show some kind of Bill Of Sale that both the buyer and seller agreed on the selling price of the car. Then you pay sales tax on that.

If you buy from a private party you will probably pay sales tax in your state when you register the car. At a dealership you may end up paying sales tax in NY. Then you would have proof that you already paid sales tax on the car (doesn't matter that is was in NY), so you would not need to pay it in VT.

Unless the tax rate in NY is lower than in VT. In most places I have lived (and that's a few) if you already paid tax, but it is not as much as you would have paid had you purchased the car 'locally,' then you pay the difference between what you paid and what you should have paid.

Car is at a dealer in NY. I would be registering it in VT.
