The rear belts mount in two different ways (c pillar bolts vs. under rear speaker shelf) but I haven't tried installing 89 rear belts into my 84 car yet. I'll give it a shot this weekend.

Well, I was wondering about the same thing and then check ETK. The '89 coupe rear seat belt unit has the same PN as that used in the '87 sedan. This surprises me because the latch is different from the '89 (the larger latch) to the '87 (smaller latch). But, I'll have to try to swap them tomorrow to see if they are, in fact, interchangeable.

The female or male ends show the same part numbers?

When I ordered the early front recepticles I got the part numbers from realeom, and they were wrong and were for the newer belts only... so ETK might be wrong here as well

Try it though, let us know how that goes. I have no idea if there is a provision for newer belts in the back of the early car, as the belts themselves mount differently (not the female ends).

          For the '89 325i coupe:

          For the '87 325e sedan:

Part #2 on both cars appears to be the same. I imagine they're both interchangeable, let me know if you discover anything different.
