What kind of gas mileage do you 325e/es's get??

So my dad has a Dodger Ram 1500 and drives a LOT. He's spending like $100 a week right now and that's just insane.

I was thinking about surprising him with a cool little gas saver and I'm wondering what kind of mileage they get, mainly city? I found an '85 and an '86 both in really good shape and reasonably priced.

I just filled up and on the last tank I pulled 27.6mpg, but that's mostly highway mileage. My OBC tells me I average 8.6l/100km, that's probably over the last 5k.

I was averaging about 27 a tank, easily closer to 30 if I drove conservatively.

          eta's pwn

I thought that the e's would have a higher fuel economy than that. My iS gets 24 - 26 driving in the city, and a bit higher on the highways. Before they added 10% ethanol to all the gas I was able to drive long highway stretches (Route 80, mostly) and get 30 MPG.

Thats pretty low mpg. I drive like a granny now and coast alot. Probably get 27mpg city in my 325i.

^Side thought, but doesn't coasting downhill out of gear result in more gas being used?

coasting out of gear doesn't use more gas. I went from 24.5mpg/32mpg city/highway in my eta to 28/36. coasting down hill out of gear helps a lot and it was one of the chief driving techniques that I adopted to get my 24 city up to 28 mpg. don't take my word for it (or anyone elses, for that matter), try it yourself.

Coasting downhill uses no gas. The fuel injectors cut out completely when you are coasting downhill and the throttle is closed.

                          ???

If no fuel was being burned, the engine wouldn't run dip shit.

Actually, AFAIK, modern injection systems don't use fuel when coasting downhill. The rotating transmission input shaft keeps the engine rotating until you press on the gas again and start combusting fuel to accelerate.

Not sure if the E30 FI system does that, though. Anyone?

Oh, 25 mpg, eta, premium, turner chip. It's a bit low, but the engine needs a good seafoaming anyway.

My '86 325es has a JimC/Turner Motorsport chip, and for the majority of the freeway driving to and from the PNW Picnic this weekend, I was getting between low-to-high 20's the whole time. We went from Bend, Oregon to Issaquah, Washington and back with several freeway jaunts and spirited drives in between (around 800 miles give or take) on only 3 1/4 full tanks.
