OT: that things looks awesome. I agree with the concern over safety here in America where every other suburban idiot thinks he needs a lifted 4x4 to get to the grocery store, but still, it's pretty badass.

I think this is a great idea from VW. Things like smart cars, this thing, etc. will catch on and that's great for the economy, environment, etc.

I contend (still) that things like this are going to require a fundamental shift in thinking. Some people have a serious NEED for something to haul stuff around in. Others don't. If it's you and a briefcase going to work - something like this just simply makes sense. Keep the Denali or whatever for friday night dates or whatever else you want to use it for - just have something like this for a commuter.

Cars like this would seriously take off if people weren't told "NONO YOU EVIL SUV DRIVING SOB, FU, EAD,STFU!@!@!!11111 YOU MUST STOP DRIVING IT" and got people into thinking that they could find a very reasonably priced car that is used for nothing but commuting to work and back, and still use their nicer - less fuel efficient SUV/sportscar/etc. as a social thing - more would jump on it. Now that some companies that have at least some prestige to people who think they need it (i.e. volkswagon is more mainstreamly accepted than Smart cars) - more of this will start to happen; hopefully.
