e36 318i fuel efficiency?

As previously stated, I think those online car-by-car mpg quotes are bs, they all claim that every car ever is horrible on gas.

I'm thinking about an e36 4 dr 318 for a daily. I will probably sell my e34 soon.

I heard people saying they got ~30mpg highway in e36 318's, but my buddy yesterday said he was only getting ~22 in his.

any input?

If its shitty, I may go to an e30 318 or try to find an 88 325e.

I prefer e36 though. Already have an e30, and I want a bit newer style for a dd (even though e30 > e36)

In my 96 318ti with the M44, I got great gas mileage. It was around 30 mpg IIRC. I know I drove it 20 miles rountrip to work every day, then the other driving most people do, like to the store and what not. Id have to fill it up every 2 weeks.

I get 27 MPG mixed with my M42 in my e30.

If you're friend is getting 22, he either

A) better have a 24v under the hood or
B) engine severely needs a tune up

I have a m43 from a 318i in my car. That engine is the best thing about my car. The consumption is about 0.6-0.7 liters per 10 kilometers with mixed driving (Mostly country roads and highways, but som city driving also).

If you had a E34 525i Touring, I would consider a trade for my '91 318i.

Does the M42/M44 motors require premium grade fuel? If it does, break down what you might expect it to cost you over the course of a year. In some cases a car with slightly worse mileage that can run on 87 octane may be the better way to go because the fuel is cheaper.

I know the M42 needs 91.

Not sure about the M44.

x2 I get 22-26 mpg in my m3 sedan, I got 19 when a o2 sensor went bad. My buddy with a Ti gets 28mpg consistently.

Kind of true, but nowadays its a difference of like 2 dollars on a full tank b/t 87 and 91. By my house its 4.67 for 91 and 4.47 for 87. And from my experiences the car gets much better gas mileage running on 91 then 87.

An E36 318 should not be getting 22 mpg period. That is ridiculous. My E36 M3 gets 28 mixed and I get 32 on long trips at 5 mph over the limit.
