I think I'm gonna go with the IE because it sounds like it's exactly what I'm looking for and it will leave me money to join the group buy on the Sparco Strut Bar.

anyone know what size to get if I just do the muffler?
I have the same problem with the rusted out muffler. If I go with the dynomax, where can I get some decent dual out tips? Talking about the 325i of course.

One reason why aftermarket cat back systems are so costly is because they use mandrel bends, "most" hacker muffler shops do not have mandrel bending equipment, therefore are cheaper, less clean looking and more restrictive.Originally posted by Robhaving a 'custom' setup done is no different from an aftermarket catback, except for the cost, and prettyness.

Not really true. Cost is due to the materials they use. They might last you longer in the long run too depending on what material they are made of, they will never rust. Just get stainless steel and you're good.Originally posted by egk2One reason why aftermarket cat back systems are so costly is because they use mandrel bends, "most" hacker muffler shops do not have mandrel bending equipment, therefore are cheaper, less clean looking and more restrictive.Originally posted by Robhaving a 'custom' setup done is no different from an aftermarket catback, except for the cost, and prettyness.
It would take a very creative moron to make a restrictive exhaust setup. Most custom systems I have seen are less restrictive and actually better than stock systems. Bear in mind factory piping is not necessarily a guarantee for power and in some cases is actually power robbing.
Custom made is all about taking it to a reputable shop. Some folks have made their own custom setups for FI and gained TONS of power with their "hacked" systems. I don't care for a pretty lookin exhaust system, save the exposed parts/tips, so far as its well done.
On a stock m20, you will not gain much hp for the $$ with a pricey exhaust system anyway. On my prev car, I had straight pipes and an Ebershcpacher (sp) OEM catback muffler, it sounded nice to me and I was satisfied with my investment. The $$ saved went into suspension which put a BIGGER :) on my face.
If Bavauto's Scorpion is the same one the guys in Europe use, its supposedly a very good sounding system.

Like I said, that is "one" of the many reasons why cost is high. An exhaust that is not mandrel bent can actually be more restrictive than a stock exhaust, also I've owned stainless steel exhaust that have rusted through, Remus, B&B. I do agree with you however that you will not gain any noticeable hp from an exhaust.Originally posted by e9nineNot really true. Cost is due to the materials they use. What was the stock piping size anyhow? I've heard that bmw used good exhaust tips back in the day, but no idea what size piping. If its not 2.25 or 2.5 i'd say go ahed and just get a good catback. Stainless steel. Of course then again, it depends on if you think its broken or not. :P (Don't fix it if its not broken.). So... do whatever. :PComment
