I was changing the plugs on a friend's '94 Honda Accord beater and the spark plug holes had a lot of dirty oil. The top half of the plugs were covered in it. The actual spark area of the plug looked normal, so it doesn't appear that the oil was getting into the cylinders.
Engine looked kind of like this:

You can see the valve cover has recessed holes on top for the spark plugs and spark plug wire connections.
Being an m20 guy, I have no idea how oil could get into those spark plug holes. Anybody more familiar with these have any ideas?
