It doesn't happen to do it in the rain or after going through a puddle or something does it?

im having similar problems and my check engine light does come on and flash. I have already put in a new Air flow meter but not seeing any positive results, as the car still sputters and at times doesn't start and runs quite rich. I have tried the fault code thing, and it tells me that the fault is a coolant temperature sensor which i highly doubt is the problem. don't know what to do.

You know I had a similar problem. Not the exact but somewhat similar. I pressure washed my engine compartment and after that I would have these symptoms:
When I'd start the car when the car was already warm the car would idle decent for about 30 seconds and then start idling horribly, wanting to die. I'd try to drive it and it wouldn't go above ~1200 RPMs and the car wouldn't move. I'd give it about 3 minutes and it'd be fine.
I finally changed the coolant temp sensor. It still did it a few times after that but it finally stopped. We were thinking maybe the cap got wet and needed to dry. Either that or the coolant temp sensor was the fix. I'm really not sure if it fixed it but it hasn't done it since. It's worth a try.

-If it is a fuel issue tho, tab on the fuel injectors. Sometimes they get stuck shut.
-Do a power-balance test: Pull one fuel injecter harness off at a time and note how the symtoms change.1989 cirrisblau-metallic 325i

I had such problem after I power washed as well cuz of the cap being broken at one screw place...
even a crack in the cap can cause such problems as the OP states
anyway...$100 says it's the cap.
