No it does it whenever it feels like it. I am going to change the filter tomorrow after I hear back from the mechanic so ill see if hopefully that will fix it :DComment

im having similar problems and my check engine light does come on and flash. I have already put in a new Air flow meter but not seeing any positive results, as the car still sputters and at times doesn't start and runs quite rich. I have tried the fault code thing, and it tells me that the fault is a coolant temperature sensor which i highly doubt is the problem. don't know what to do.Comment

change your coolant temp sensor anyways. if thats bad it will cause the car to run rich.im having similar problems and my check engine light does come on and flash. mine used to sputter and not get enough gas. i would step on gas and rev up and still very little power. and then it dies.
i was told to change the fuel filter. i did. and it was fine after that.
but, yours might be a diff story.

already changed the Fuel pump and filter, and i dont think it is an ignition problem because I would be smelling gas. and it is not flooding out it is just loosing gas, and it only does it when you hold a revComment

You know I had a similar problem. Not the exact but somewhat similar. I pressure washed my engine compartment and after that I would have these symptoms:
When I'd start the car when the car was already warm the car would idle decent for about 30 seconds and then start idling horribly, wanting to die. I'd try to drive it and it wouldn't go above ~1200 RPMs and the car wouldn't move. I'd give it about 3 minutes and it'd be fine.
I finally changed the coolant temp sensor. It still did it a few times after that but it finally stopped. We were thinking maybe the cap got wet and needed to dry. Either that or the coolant temp sensor was the fix. I'm really not sure if it fixed it but it hasn't done it since. It's worth a try.

-Not nessaseraly (sp?) Just check out the system anyway.
-If it is a fuel issue tho, tab on the fuel injectors. Sometimes they get stuck shut.
-Do a power-balance test: Pull one fuel injecter harness off at a time and note how the symtoms change.1989 cirrisblau-metallic 325iComment

exactly why i suggested looking at the distributor cap...You know I had a similar problem. Not the exact but somewhat similar. I pressure washed my engine compartment and after that I would have these symptoms:

I had such problem after I power washed as well cuz of the cap being broken at one screw place...
even a crack in the cap can cause such problems as the OP states
anyway...$100 says it's the cap.
