Well maybe that's because it's the only 4cylinder M3, all the other ones have 6cylinders that are much more powerful and smooth than the e30's 4cyl.

e36's are big, heavy, and plastic looking

the e30 m3 was a track car built for the street, the e36 m3 was a street car built for the track.

If you noticed, BMW didnt make the e36 M3 for performace and sport. The e30 M3 was intended for your racing and all that crap and then built its reputation with the M3 name. Once the e36 came out, BMW decided just to put a bigger engine, a new steering wheel, and some new rims on it and call it a M3. They didnt even do any real body changes. The thing is, it was ment for sales, cauz of the nice M3 name, with a crap car. Many e36 M3's also came in automatic, and 4 door. How can a regular e36 (remember, e36 were also very problamatic, i dont know with wat, but the maintanece of an E30 is alot eaiser says most independant bimmer websites and magazines), with just an M3 badge on it (witch was how most e30 M3's were), be any better than the world renoun DTM champion, the amazing BMW E30 M3?

ok if that's the way you look at it that's your opinion. I could argue with you and a lot of people on why the e36 is a better choice to me, but the truth is they both have ups and downs to them. There are good things about the e30 that are bad things about the e36 and good things about the e36 that are bad things about the e30. It's your opinion on which M3 you think is "heavier, has too much plastic" or whatever have you but I would be willing to bet you that an OBDII euro spec stock e36 M3 would stomp any stock e30 M3, I'm sure the other stock e36's would beat the stock e30's, it's just it wouldn't be as severe as the euro OBDII M3. Just remember every model M3 they have come out with is overall better performance not worse. You can't say an e30 is a "better" car because each model has significant improvments from the last, just look at the e36 to the e46, there is lots of improvment there as there is from the e30 to e36.

I think my M42 is pretty smooth. I can imagine the same about the S14.

I've been in a E46 M3, and while it's wickedly awesome, the BEST (to me) M3 is the E30 M3. You can't change my mind about it.

You probably don't even want to know what my favorite M car is...

EDIT: Speed isn't everything when comparing these cars. I'd HOPE that the newer M3s are faster, but there's just something about E30 M3. It's more raw, less technical. I like that quality about it.
The BMW 318 is back. With a vengeance.

then you sure as hell can't call the e36 the better m3.

besides your coming to an e30 owners board to preach the E36 M3.

Hell you want my opinion, I would not be caught dead owning an E36 anything, nor an OBDII anything. and I don't care if it WAS better

I am not here to preach the e36 M3 or change anyones mind. I thought I was entilted to an opinion as all of you are. I am not looking for a big argument here, but I will say I respect all the models and don't mind driving any of them. I just don't see why some people "hate" on any model other than an e30. I happen to respect e30 m3's and e36, and e46 all the same. It's just whichever you prefer. By the way James Crivellone, I wouldn't be caught dead driving a BMW with a slushbox automatic tranny except for the 7 or x5

The ///M Cars died out for me when they became mass produced. The First ///M5 and ///M3's were hand built, IIRC.

alright guys, how bout we shut up about e36's before i shut you up.

the e36 is big, and clumsy that is why it has a 6cy to pull its weight around, the e30 is small and nimble , that why they went to the 4cyl because IT IS LIGHTER...lighter=better handling characteristics, just remeber when you argue about certain models of vehicles remember where you are and who your talking with. this is a forum geared to e30's.

i am purchasing an e30 m3, its just a matter of which ones, i do not like e36's at all.
                        i like e46's better.

so if you have opinons on my first post leave them, if not...well leave.

oh and by the way, which m3 was the most sucessfull racing touring car?

it was the e30 with over 1,300 wins

As I said if you were paying attention, I am not looking for a big argument here, I simpily made a statement of my opinion just like you guys have done. I only said I don't like automatic tranny's, ya'll say you don't like e36 m3's, you are saying I have made myself look like a fool by stating an opinion just as you guys did  that's amazing. I'm not down with immature arguments over the internet, I like to discuss cars with open minded educated people, since when has this e30 m3 vs. any other model m3 rivalry been going on....I respect all of your cars just as I wish i could get the same respect for mine.....but apparently all I'm doing is making myself look like a fool

ye that's cool and everything but I didn't know that you were die hard going to buy an e30 and you didn't like e36's at all...I was just saying an e36 is an updated model for around the same price where that could be an option if you were not so partial to e30's. Now I see how you and most other people on this forum feel about models other than e30's being brought in to discussion. I didn't think it would offend people by mentioning the option of an e36 M3 but it did. I was only trying to help, not change your mind or suggest an e30 is not capable. I am not on here bashing your cars and i think it'd be cool and mature of you guys not to bash mine.

hahahah, well unlike your dime a dozen E36's its fairly hard to find a good condition 86/87 E30.
