Well, this is a timeless debate. Most people are biased towards what they own. The best summation I've heard is from a guy who owns both:
"The E36 M3 is an awesome car. The E30 M3 is an awesome experience!"
The E36 is more comfortable and a better daily driver and the E30 is more fun because it's more like driving a go kart.
IMO, comparing the E36 with the E30 is like comparing a 5-series with a 3-series. The E36 weighs as much as my E28 535, ~3200 lbs, and BMW currently makes nothing as small and light as the E30. If you think size doesn't matter, witness the Lotus Elise. It has only 190hp, but it will run rings around an M3 becasue the Lotus weighs <2000 lbs.
Regardless of which is a better car, BMW NA imported + sold WAY more E36 M3's than E30 M3's, and some of each bite the dust every day. E30 M3's are becoming a scarce item, and I already see many E30's with asking prices higher than those of many E36's.

I agree a lot of people are bias to what they own, however I don't have a problem admitting the e46 M3 is a much improved model from what I have and overall a better car. I think it's funny to see some of these guys get all worked up when an e36 is mentioned, people are trying to prove that its just not a good M3 at all but the only point they are proving to me is that they're pissed because guys like james are stuck with a base model automatic entry level e30 bmw and are pissed because they could not get anything better so in turn they make fun of others and their cars. That's all I picked up from james when he started on how he told me to continue lusting over my plastic boatish M3 as he said, hey james you wanna race asshole and see who comes out on top??? I HAD respect for his joke of a BMW and still have respect for others e30's on here until they lose respect for what I drive. This seems like a matter of maturity and jelousy for some, and others genuinely like e30's for what they are about more rather than just like e30's because they have one like this clown james. Anyways like I said if you'd like to continue knocking my car james why don't you stop playing childish games and meet me at the track. Otherwise I believe this thread was started by someone who was looking for an e30 M3 and not bashing others cars like james started on so with that being said lets give the talking shit about others cars up, it's pretty damn stupidComment

Base model entry level automatic e30 bmw? Yep that is what I drive, and I would rather have it then a fucking E36. I respect E36 owners, on an e36 board. Hell i have seen e30 owners getting ripped on for suggesting E30's on an E36 board, you expect a different nature here? If you enjoy your car fine, however you must realize that many people here (including myself) despise the e36, as I feel it does not even fall into a 3 series catagory, its too damn big.

And as I said earlier, unlike your e36, finding a good condition e30 takes some work, and if you must know even further, in 3 weeks I won't have an automatic anymore, and if you REALLY must know, mid 2005 I will have a turbo bolted onto my 2.8 Stroker. Damn i'm soooo jealous of your car now.

well main thing is you don't have this manual transmission now and you don't have this turbo now but even when that happens I am confident my current setup will still get you, and by the time you have your turbo and manual transmission and blah blah blah I will have been doing more things to my car that whole time....do you know what is done to my car?? I'm going to say it again, just because a car is faster, doesn't mean it's better. Ok? Mine's pretty damn slow, but it's THE most fun car I have EVER driven.
I bet I could out handle drag cars, but according to you, those are instantly better than mine...
I think once you've got your car where you want it, it's more than a sum of it's parts. BMW did a pretty good job with my E30, as I don't want to change much.
And also, seriously, if you cherish the E36 soo much, stop fucking ripping on automatic E30s. I can find some automatic E36s that you can "beat". It doesn't matter...
And guess what? I already know my E30 318is dominates the E36 318is with the same motor. Those things weigh a lot more. So I guess that means I'm better. 8)The BMW 318 is back. With a vengeance.Comment

Well that's cool man. My car puts a smile on my face as well, and that is the reason I have it just like all you guys have e30's. Like I said if you don't like e36's then don't drive one, but please don't sit there and talk shit about them when your car would get stomped on 1,000 different ways by my euro powered e36 M3. Oh and by the way hamman318is, I can understand you enjoying your e30 just as much as this dumb ass james and that's great it can beat an e36 318is, but why are you even talking about that when you would get beat just as bad by my e36 M3, an e36 318is and an e36 M3 with a euro motor are a whole lot different if you didn't know that smart guy. So the answer would be NO that does not make you better. All you guys are doing is talking about how being faster isn't everything, so what my car is way faster and can out handle your e30's anyday. HAH, yeah I drive a cheap 3 series just to tell peopel that I drive a bmw, dude I don't even want a damn M3, yes thats correct, I would take my car when I have it completed over an M3, and yes, it would still be a shitty baseline 3 series, then again only the VIN would relate to that. I get more enjoyment out of creating something nice out of a BASELINE 3 Series, then buying a top of the line 3 series and making it "better".

I'm sure there are some e30's with excellent handling that could hang with my car....I only said the harsh comments I did because of you bashing e36's in the first place, and I did not at first realize this guys thread was about only an e30 M3, otherwise I wouldn't have made the e36 suggestion.....I'm supposed to get my scanner back from my friend and I'll post pics and the dyno chart of my m3 for my sig so you have a better understanding of why I may have talked shit backComment

Guys CHILL. Take it outside, outside of Spaz's post. The man wants to buy an E30 M3. If he asked to buy an E36 M3 then you could talk the finer points of the E36. Nobody is raping you when buying an E30 M3 (unless you let them) because those cars were a limited production run an a limited import to the US compared to the E36. And the E36 isnt even the real M3 like the E30 and E46 ones were. The only performance diff between the E30 US and International M3 were the diff, and cat.
As for the rest, hey, they do have an endearing quality. Since they were so common its easy to find totalled ones to pull engines out of. 8)Im now E30less.
