cool app, but i don't see it being accurate enough for a car. some games use the accelerometer and implement it pretty well, but it still doesnt seem very precise.

The accelerometer is actually very precise in the iphone. The inaccuracies of this app; like with anything, will come from the user input (weight, drivetrain loss, improper use, etc.). The accelerometer and GPS will make it very accurate otherwise. But just like the Gtech, there will be people claiming ridiculous things solely based on their little thingy.

I believe apple and AT&T had something like a four or five year contract. So I guess it could happen, but I really don't know.

BUT, before the new 2.0 firmware update, I unlocked my phone and I ran an application called AnySIM and threw my friend's Sprint SIM in there and it worked beautifully. I'm sure people have already made the app for the new firmware too.


Also, it is funny that just a couple months ago everyone was hating on the iphone. I was running third party apps back then (including an accelerometer logger). As soon as an app like this comes out, people are wishing they had one. It was a fad to say the phones were a fad.

I think a lot of people are changing their tune about them ever since the 3G came out, especially since now it's half the price. The original price was outrageous.

True, but it is still $400 if you don't have an upgrade ability. So I; with my first gen phone, would have to pay $400 if I wanted a new one. That's the only thing that's stopped me.

people with ATT with the 1st gen iphone get the discounted upgrade price as long as they sign another 2 year contract. so you could get one for $200 + $18 for renewal.

i just downloaded this and started shaking the phone around in my hand. i pulled 2.3 Gs braking! 1.76 lateral Gs.

Ha, that is probably true. I don't want to test it with my stock m20.

But I did just go try it out with my mom's car. She lives in Bellevue, so I really couldn't find a good place to do a 0-60 run. The only place I could do one was on an on ramp to I-90 and it was up a significant hill. The numbers it reported were 8.5 sec 0-60, 170 hp with 0% drivetrain loss (wheel horsepower) and the top speed was off by 1-2 mph. Had it been on flat ground, I think it would be pretty close to the real thing.

I'm very interested in finding out how well it works when I can do it on a flat, straight road from a dig.

You can do the same with a Wii remote and a laptop. Wiimotes are Bluetooth, so all you need is software. See here:

Too bad iPhones are so expensive....I just can't justify spending that much on a phone when I already have a hacked Video and a cell phone that work well enough for everything. Plus it's another $100 for service...

They have a contract, but if you look at it from another perspective

GSM Carriers in the US

AT&T = Decent 3G Network, capable of actually running the iphone at 3g speeds
T-Mobile = Stuck in the past with an ancient EDGE network that they may consider upgrading if they ever decide to compete again.

CDMA

Verizon: Horrible carrier when it comes to choice, would probably force apple into running Qualcom Brew and charge for just about everything under the sun

Sprint: Great data carrier, however I don't see apple building any CDMA devices.

also, with no tach input, it's not really worth anything. neat I guess, but $400 buys enough time on a real dyno to fully tune an engine anyway.
