My personal favorite is the 1983 Honda CB1100F but then I'm just old-school I guess ;). If I had to get a newer bike, as a starter, the less power it has the better. I do love Buells, but I've never ridden one so I guess that's just skin-deep.

I just picked up a KTM 690 Duke. It a great urban bomber, and a blast to ride.

no bike experience , get a small one , get your self familiar how a bike feels, and all the shit you have to wear on to take off every time you get on and off the bike, and the smell of sweat . remember you have one foot on your grave once you ride a bike. i lost my friend a while back riding his bike after a year off from riding. just a word of advice.

Forgot to add to budget $700-1000 for a good gear.

Oh I also forgot to mention you need to hang out at starbucks with all the real riders.

Seriously though- its a cliche but so true-- its so much fun going fast on a slow bike vs going slow on a fast bike. I started on a F3 600 for about 6 months before I jumped up to a 04 cbr600rr for about a year. I bought brand new an 07 cbr1000rr --- been about a year and while its a beast its not nearly as fun as the 04 600.

most importantly gear up-- always! I still wear leather on 90+ degree days.Sweat doesnt hurt as bad as rash.

I would go with a ninja too shitty if I were you I hate the sv 650. One cylinder motorcycles are meant for dirt they vibrate way to much to be comfortable on the street. I myself pretty am going to be looking for a decent used gixxer 750 hopefully soon.

                        SV 650 is a V-twin chief.

Sounds like you should start out on a Vespa.

if I where you i would take a riding class and read a lot of books. I started reading about riding when i was 14 i didn't get a bike untill i was 18 and if i got into a hairy situation, it was already like second nature to me how to get out. to me it seems a waist of money to buy a 250 then sell it and buy a 600. just start out with a 600 preferably fuel injected. cbr600f4i,r6,gsxr600,zx636r.
