Yes and yes. That is why even if you get a rear flat tire, you should ALWAYS put the spare on the front of the car. It's the reverse for FWD of course.
I know in Subaru's there is a way to disable the AWD so if you do get a flat, you can actually drive. All it take is unplugging a fuse. Otherwise you would need a full size spare.
