Sound deadening. It's old tech though, you can get better NVH isolation with a single layer of Dynamat and it weighs about 90% less than the tar.

Yeah, I know it's used for sound/heat deadening, but surely they could have used something else for that. I guess it falls back on the old technology idea though.
