    Drove an E30 M3 for the First Time - Thank you cactusjacks1

    Two years ago I met and saw cactusjacks1 and his lachsilber/cardinal E30 M3 for the first time. Jack is supa cool and his M3 is one of the best examples I have seen. About a year ago I got the itch for an M3 started pinging him with questions and sending him links to M3's that were up for sale, to get his input. Having never actually driven an E30 M3, I asked if I could take his for a spin. This past Saturday we went for a 45 minute drive through Silverado Canyon :D

    It was really, really nice. His car is stock except for Tokico's... it handled extremely well (as you already know) and was a genuine blast to drive. Now I fully understand why the E30 M3 has received such multitude of praise and accolades. Which other car back in 1987 could compete with it? No wonder the auto mag scribes were blown away...

    It's so true.. even the bone stock ones are a blast.

    Sometimes I think I enjoy driving my dads stock one a little bit over my balls-to-the-wall modified m3. His is more compliant, smoother, etc. Mine just makes a shit load of noise and has one thing in mind; going fast.

    Go drive a highly modified car and see what you think if you can get your hands on one....

      MArk, still got the M3 itch huh? Wanna give(sell) your 325 to me? HAHA

        Mark, Glad I could help in your learning curve on the E30M3. It was really a hoot to watch your face on the spirited drive through the canyon - I think your addiction is getting close to complete & Devon has started a line for buyers of your red 325 !! Time to step up the pace of the hunt.

          HAHA, Jack, don't put me on th front lines just yet. While Marks car is amazing, I cant really have it. :(

            Mines locked up nice and tight. Dont get any ideas, haha. ;)

              I understand Devon. Number 2, please come to the head of the line. When Mark (not if, but when) puts this quietly up for sale, you will get a pm notifying you of the pending sale & you will have 1st right of refusal.

                They are what Motorsport intended for a road-going racecar. E30 M3 was the pinnacle IMO, and fell off from there. Chassis development increased with the newer cars, as did marketing and widespread customer appeal by 10-fold. But if you want driver communication, stick with an E30 M3. :D

                I drove an E90 M3 today and was largely disappointed in a number of ways.

                  Really? How about the motor? I've heard the S65 is much better in a multitude of ways compared to the S52/4. That said, it's still a new car. Lots of technology buried beneath lots of painted plastic.

                    I daily mine (unfortunate victim of circumstance) and relish every minute. (After the engine warms up to temp, of course). I let my friend drive it on a twisty road out in the desert and the smile on his face was awesome. He looked like he had just seen Jessica Alba take her top off in front of him. And, he drives a motorcycle most days, so he's used to driving excitement.

                      The engine was great, it's just in a car that's too heavy, isn't geared correctly, and has a boat anchor flywheel. Given the characteristics of the engine, that's not the combination you'd expect from Motorsport (or is it?).

                        Hmm, interesting, but not at all surprising. I have heard pretty rave reviews about the E90/2/3 M3, but it seems that they are losing focus on vital aspects of their M cars. I'd love to drive one though, just to get the bad taste that is BMW throwing a V8 in an M3 out of my mouth.

                          Jack, the car was awesome!

                          On my way home I thought to myself that driving your car had sealed my 325is' fate as a has-been - that I would be restless and pining for an E30 M3. However, when I drove my car later that afternoon, I was pleasantly surprised: The H&R's, Billy's, RD sways, and Dinan camber plates are doing thier job quite well (the Azenis RT 615's help, too). The TMS chip and 4:10 are performing thier intended functions very well, too. M3 seats, the Momo wheel and Z3 2.8 shifter complete the package... somehow I am more satisfied with my car now, after driving the M3... wacky, huh?

                          I am in no way trying to minimize the E30 M3 or agrandize my car. They are what they are: a bone stock M3 that felt like it was on rails and was super easy to rev-match, and a 325is that has been modded to a very high degree, that handles and pulls pretty darn well :D

                          Still, I would love to own an E30 M3.
