starting probs

My neighbor has a 1987 325 (not i or e on emblem) It has started having intermittent starting probs. It would not make a sound at first until we push started it. then it starts up every time. he drove it to work last week and it wouldn't start less than 2 mins after shutting it off.
Any ideas?

did he check the battery? not just the voltage but have it checked to see if it can handle a load.
