    Sourcing a used motor (M20)

Where is a good place to find a used M20 engine, thanks

I am going to start building a second motor from scratch but I want to work with something that is running, weird it seems but its more cost effective this way.

    Thanks, :D

Oh, and I am looking on ebay but I am not familiar with the companies selling the ones currently listed.

Not sure about any companies, but you'll probably get a much better deal buying one from someone on the forum then a company. Having said that... if my friend backs out of buying my motor, you're welcome to it. It has 145K on it, ran perfect when it was pulled, and supposedly the head was rebuilt by the previous owner but i have no way of proving that so take it for what it is. $450.

Buy local. Buy from a member if you can. Buy one that is under 125k if you can.

With that said. I can't tell you how many m20 blocks I've thrown in a random dumpster.

Thanks TD :finger: jk, I know about the classifieds!

Buddy of mine has one that has an extra short block, but the head is royally f'd up on. Should I consider it, if so How much should it be worth?

            $1. You need to search.

What do you think i did from midnight to about 2 am this morning?...I had a lot of my questions answered but you can never ask too many questions. Excuse the questions, I apologize.

              one search I did:

              Key words: used engine
              Results: http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/sear...archid=1979517

              others:

Key words: used engine , rebuilt, building an engine etc...
              Results: Many, few, some

Time to sort through everything: 2 hours (too long)

OK, ok, oookkk. I'll try to be helpful. Do you even have the tools to build up a short block? No? Yes?

I'd would say (and I don't think anyone would disagree with me) that buying a m20 on ebay is not a good idea. The motors are so plentiful, that a pick-up truck and 50 miles will net you something decent. With that said, almost any FUBR motors can be repaired by your local machine shop.

I threw out 2 extra M20 blocks and a ton of other parts before I realized how much storage space I had under my house. :(

I do have tools, have a garage with everything but a lift. (even collapsible paint booth) From my thread in the project forum you can see that I have all the tools ( i was using my buddies garage since mine had to get a new roof on it)

I have a great machine shop about a mile from me, all the guys race there (redneck racing though) so thats not the problem. My problem I see as I plan this out, is the actual engine itself, meaning known history, problems, etc...and the cost to repair replace. I don't want to spend $10k building an engine, but want something that over time will essentially perform the same as a $10K engine, if that makes sense.

Plans being: Strip it down, asses everything
Block: bead blasted, painted/powder coat etc..
                    etc...

not necessarily a ground up build but a build that is worthy of my time and money.

Wow, I just confused myself...I need a break (been up for two days, Graduate School sux!! )

Anyway, thanks for being helpful, was that so hard :P

A basic M20 rebuild could never even come close to $10k - you could do it right for around $1000-1500. even a built up M20 isn't all that expensive, unless you buy every "upgrade" just because it costs more than whatever you're replacing (dbilas ITBs, I'm thinking of you..).

point taken, i was trying to use $10k as a figure of speech..I guestimated it so far to be right around 2k +/-, not just doing a basic rebuild. Thanks for the comment!

Just find a leak-free M20 B25 from someone who is parting out a 325i/s and rebuild that. It should run you somewhere in the neighborhood of $1500-1700 when it's all said and done.

                          That's what I'd do.

email or pm me, I've got a couple of candidates, from a decent runner to one with a broken t-belt.

I'm about 2.5-3 hrs drive from Richmond, not far from Raleigh NC.
