For those that have parted out cars?

For any one where who has parted out a car did you do it inside a garage or out side?
If You did it again what would you change about the location.
I'm planning on picking up a 1987 325is parts car this afternoon, and could either tightly squeeze it into the back of our garage, or part it out side in the dirt. Last Time I parted my 2 325e parts cars I had them in the garage, and pulled off everything but the suspension then Rolled them out side where I removed the suspension and set the body on blocks.
With this car I plan on parting it to a rolling shell then sell the rolling shell as it's never been wrecked and is straight and rust free. The cylinder head was oil starved so it would be to hard to rebuild the car.

I've done both, neither way really bothered me, as it was always decent weather when I started removing parts, the only con is stripping the inteiror outside, as if it does start to rain when you have the doors off you better cover it up quickly =)

The doors, glass, sunroof panel won't be coming off. I'm just trying to figure where I should have the seller drop it off. He lives about 6 mins down the road from me so were just going to tow it with chains over hear.
What did you do about Jack stands and getting under it with it being in the dirt? I guese I could put plywood under them so they don't sink in or something. As I'll be pulling the 5-speed tranny, drivetrain and engine block.

I did mine in my garage, I couldn't stand doing it outside in the sun and heat. The only thing I would change is better organization, and putting my tools back where they belong :)

I would do it in the garage, but with the car in there and all our stuff I'd have no room to walk around the car, I'd either have to climb threw it to get to the other side or go under it. I need to go measure mine and see for sure. Our garage is deep enough for 2 cars and the Front half is taken up so it would go into the back half where I have storage shelves, m30 engine on a stand, 2 cabinents of parts, a Large Freezer, and more. I've pulled my car into there to change out the diff cover but the Front end blocked the side door to get into the garage. I could pull all the crap away from the back end so it can go straight to the wall but I don't have any where to put it afterwards.
My tools are allready organized and I always put them right back sometimes to early.

I do mine on a lift with airtools.
I'd much prefer to have a nicer lazy-boy though to supervise....

I've got Air tools, and they can be used in either place with enough extension cord.
Are Driveway is around 600 feet long and from the Garage to where the car would be parked is around 150 feet.

I always do it outside under large shade trees.Once all the heavy stuff is removed like engine tanny, interior, doors etc., strut housings.Just flip it over on its side to remove diff and and other undercarriage stuff.then go crazy on it with a sawz all and off to scrap goes the shell.excellent way to relieve stress by demolishing an e30 shell.

this time of the year do it outside. puth the jack stands on the 12*12 or 16*16 steeping stones from homedepot. As long as the windows and doors stay on it outside is ok. part it from the inside out and the neighbors will be happier. Also if you have a car cover use it. Dead of winter or summer use the garage without question. This will keep the garage open for your driver etc.

Closest neighbor is 700 feet away and they can't even see are house or driveway, it's nice living in the country. I think I'll stick it in the garage first to remove the engine block, tranny and drivetrain. Then roll it out side and pull the interior and any other small tidbits.
The shell won't be going to the scraper unless I can't find anyone who can use it. It's completly rust free, never been wrecked and straight. I'd keep it but don't have the room right now and I'd rather have the money from parting out most of the car. That way I can spend the money on my m30 engine swap.

I have done 3 cars now, all on the STREET, no air tools, just jack stands and lots of work. If I did it again though, I would now use the lift in our garage and have the car done in 2 days, cut up and off to the recycle bin at my work
Be organized. Clean parts as you remove them, take pics at that time, log them down on paper and box them up right away. It saves time later and you will be ready to sell everything quickly on e-bay or forums.

Thanks for the Tips, it looks like It will be done in the Dirt, but the front end will be over the concrete for pulling the engine block out.
