If there is a US-based engine supplier who can create a compact, clean diesel which Ford can utilize for a few models, couldn't something like this work? Other manufacturers have done similar approaches - whether its just drivetrains or entire platforms.
Just a thought to ponder.

2 problems though, first it is a $26k subcompact built by Ford. Who here would honestly buy one (when you could get a Jetta TDI for the same price)? Honda can charge more easier due to their reputation.
The other problem, European diesels aren't nearly as clean as the US requires them to be. Making them clean enough you wouldn't get 65mpg and could add to the cost.

Some more info, not getting into the cost of building a diesel engine plant.
Standards for emissions.
Euro IV = 0.25 g/km = 0.4 g/mi
US T2B5 (50K miles) = 0.03 g/km = 0.05 g/mi
US T2B5 (120k miles) = 0.044 g/mk = 0.07 g/mi
Bin 2, possibly the future for diesels...
US T2B2 (120k miles) = 0.0125 g/km = 0.02 g/mi

Have you ever driven a Fiesta. I have, one the current shapes. It wasn't bad but it was boring, very boring, oh and small, no boot small.
And the other other thing, on long journeys you find your right foot getting heavy. The wrong type of accelerator you know, the kind that provides no support for your foot. Kind of hopeless for good mpg.

I'd definitely get one over a Versa. Atleast BMW got the green light for the 335d. I hope the are smart enough to offer it in all of their card. Imagine a 135d. Tasty!!Your signature picture has been removed since it contained the Photobucket "upgrade your account" image.
