you don't need the wider tunnel for the 5 speed swap, plus you have to swap over the pedal box, pedal cluster, etc if you start with an auto, that is assuming he would want the 5 speed.
square taillights only look good with euro bumpers, just like e21s

You don't need the auto tunnel but it sure beats whacking the tunnel with a hammer to make room for the clutch slave.
I can't think of any reason to keep the 4 speed other than the fact you want a stock unmolested car.

Squares do look best without the big bumpers. I shaved the front off of mine and shortened the rear, it look OK like that. I have 3 shorty chrome rear bumpers laying around now, one of these days I'll get around to putting one on the car as I filled the extra holes for the big bumpers already before I painted the car.

If you are looking for an investment type car, get an unmolested roundie of some sort. If you want to make a hot rod/bastard child an auto is a great place to start as they are normally dirt cheap even in good condition.

The biggest thing to watch for when buying a deuce is rust, almost any is bad when you look at the cost of fixing it whether it is time spent or dollars burned.
