fyi there is no octane boost that will give you enough octane to go from 87 to even 88 (I have a grand prix gtp, and we have tried them all, most are snake oil and do nothing for you, lucas is the only one that raises it enough to measure)

I run 87 for three seasons, 89 in the summer. Runs fine.

This passed week i was forced to run a tank of 87 with some STP octane booster (i fig'd i'd at least add a little more octane) and couldn't even tell a difference. I, too, have a Mark D chip that requires 91. Filled her back up with 93 tonight though.

Yes, because your engine pinging is such a good thing

I dunno if you're going to check this again, but for the first time in 2 months I was able to fill up with 93

As you probably already know, Nashville got hit REALLY hard this past month. We didnt have ANY gas at all. What little was coming in, people had stalked it out and was lined up for miles down the street to get it.
Im running a MarkD 91 octane chip and I gotta say, there isnt much difference in how the car runs. The knock is slightly a bit more, but nothing dangerous i dont believe. If you need to, throw some octane booster in. I've confirmed this is ok through some kids at the Nashville Auto Diesel College.

just so you know, there is inaudible pinging also. just because you can't hear it doesn't mean it isn't happening and causing damage.

also octane boosters are not completely snake oil. the fact that they state they raise octane is false. they actually chemically slow down the burn travel so it behaves like there is a higher octane gas being used. you can use it as a stop gap to get you by for a short time. you will not have the performance benefits of thew higher octane gas

In fact, the only thing it does is what you described, slow down burn travel

I believe he means the performance benefits from the chip w/ the high octane fuel.

do you guys get better gas mileage with higher octane ? I figure I would but don't really have the patience to test that kind of thing.

exactly! or if you have a high enough compression ratio (without enough valve overlap in the cam) to warrant or require running 91/93

ok, so what's the SAFE answer. If this happens again, do I park my car or can I SAFELY run lower octane with my Mark D chip and my setup???

you should be safe as long as you use an "octane booster" to get you through if you really want to drive the car without the right gas. not forever, just for now. just remember it is a "band-aid" to get you through.

only if the car requires it will you get better
