Thought I would post this up. A while ago I posted up my mk3 vr6 that I got with a blown motor that I was gonna swap a new one into. Well after trying to make the original engine fire up and that didn't work, I went a new direction.
This year in class we have to rebuild a motor. My plan was to take out a fatty loan for the m3 and try to get as much done as I can. But taking out a $15k loan for my new jetta I can't afford to sink anything into the m3. So I am doing a build up on my mk3 vr6. The plan is just to sell the fucker when I'm done and try to get as close to breaking even on the whole deal as possible. I'm doing it for school not profit (although it wouldn't hurt my feelings if I made a few bucks on it)
Ill play catchup on r3v and post up some pics of what I got done so far. Its finally starting to get interesting.
This is the car when I first got it:

So heres what I got done in the first 2 days.
Almost read to pull, just need to get the exhaust off:

Axles out

My shambles of an interior this far:

I think the ignition switch is dead. So this is how I have been testing the engine lol

Compression is pretty pitiful, must have some pretty good damage or someone really ran this engine into the ground
Dry Wet
110 65
90 100
125 110
65 75
70 75
120 130
I think the wet is a little skewed, the battery was starting to die down when I was cranking.

Also found this sitting under my window wiper when I came out

I was parked in the staff lot... bastards...

My work area filling up with parts

Shop graffiti lol

Better late then never, bolted on some fender covers.

The connecting rods were BAD. Every bearing was shot to ****. Engine must have lost oil pressure because they were all wiped out. Main bearings were "ok" a lot better than the connecting rods, but 2 were scored.
I'm hoping the crank can be salvaged, cyl 4 was pretty brutal though. The bearings spun out, stuck together, and just ate the crank away. Its blue and brown, scorched pretty bad. That connecting rod is bad too, again I'm hoping I can just have them re-machined and get some over sized bearings.
Getting a new crank wouldn't be too big of a deal, but I don't want to buy new rods since the cheapest ones I could find were around $800. I guess worst case I could get some "good" used stock ones and have them re-worked. Since I'm not going FI or anything I don't see the point in forged rods.

I thought my pics were better than this, but looking at them now they are pretty ****ty.

This is the scorched one I think, ****ty as pics though. I will have to take some better ones tomorrow and learn how to use a camera lol

This was cyl 4s bearing ** Ninja Edit: The top one is a non-broken bearing for comparison **

I think its both halves, but its hard to tell. Looking at the "good" ones you can see where its 2 pieces of metal pressed together. Stacking the 2 in the pic like I took them out, (I had to pry them off the crank with a screw driver) its 3 layers. I think one is the top, and ones the bottom, but one of them got worn down a **** ton.

Rod is pretty bad

Crank STILL didn't turn out good lol, I have it zip tied to the leg of my table and I was too lazy to cut it off

Piston skirts

Oil pump gone!

Walls aren't too bad, I have a pretty good rust edge up top though. Worst one I measured was cyl 4 again, wore out 4 thousands max on the wall.

head

I forgot to mention one of the head bolts bent on me, I think its because I messed up the order on taking the bolts out, I was off by 1 one 1 side

starting to fill up....
