    Toyota check engine light

    Friend with a 98 tacoma. How can I get the fault codes to flash without using a scanner?

    I got this off another website and I wondering if anyone has used it or if theres a chance It is going to screw up the electrical system.

    Reading the diagnostic trouble codes is very easy. You will need a paper clip to short the check connectors of the diagnostic connector. The diagnostic connector comes in two types. The early system is located on the inner-left fender well and is a round, green connector, usually located near the air cleaner.

    Simply jump the two terminals in this connector with the ignition switch in the "ON" position and the engine off. Later models, '87 and newer use a multiple terminal "DIAGNOSTIC" connector which is a small, rectangular-shaped grey "box", usually located near the right fender in the enigne compartment. To get codes out of this type of connector, jump the "TE1" and "E1" teminals.

    Finding these terminals is easy as the inside cover of the diagnostic connector contains a schematic of the connector pinouts. If the underhood emission decal (VECI) is still intact on your vehicle, the proper pins for this are outlined there as well.
    The trouble codes will appear as flashes of the check engine lamp. Be sure the ignition key is on, the engine off, and your foot off of the accelerator when reading the codes.

    take it to autozone. they will read your codes for free. i am pretty sure they can scan all obdII cars

      IIRC, you can't do that on OBD2 toyota cars/truck.

        you can't jump termanals on OBD II cars, you have to use a scanner

        like der affe said, take it to an Adavance/Autozone

          Thanks, will just bring it in. I didn't wanna screw it up anyways. Pretty sure its the O2 sensor.

            I absolutely LOVE customers like you. ;)

            It could just as easily be a valve adjustment issue, or a MAF problem, or, etc...

              For some reason I also think its O2 sensor, I think I have 3 of them for my 325 yet it is still using the one that came on the car when I purchased it.

                  are y'all stupid? Maybe 15%, tops, of CELs are O2-realted.

                  there are HUNDREDS of things that wil turn that light on

                      no duh. since he has a few bmws hes asking other bmw owners (not all own JUST bmws) if they knew anything about it. why would he go to a toyota forum asking for help when he could make the process easier and less complicated by asking on here?

                        you cant screw anything up reading obd2 codes on a scanner. take it to autozone, have them pull the codes from the terminal under the dash, and go from there.

                            Going to autozone. And gonna let them tell us whats wrong, and get whatever we need there. I don't think she cares who makes the parts and probably won't feel like waiting for BMApatrick to ship. Thanks for the help.

                            I did come to the right place, general discussion which is for car related stuff, I didn't go to M20 technical did I?
