Engine Stuck on high Rev - please help!

As I was driving yesterday, the check engine light comes on an off. The engine revs up to 4,000rpm on its own and is stuck there. I pull off the road, put the car in neutral (manual tranny) and it stays at about 4,000rpm. I turn off the car and restarts it and it goes back to being normal with no check engine light. But as I start to take off again, same thing occurs. What is the culprit?

Check your RPM check valve. If thats fine, bypass your speedometer. HTH

I'd say check the idle control valve.

It sounds suspiciously like a loose connection, so I'd check and clean all oft eh plugs in the engine bay just to be sure that isn't the issue.

^wrd. there;s a threaded screw thing, with a little nut to lock it on. maybe that came loose. usually when icv's go you just have a shit idle, can't accelerate, and sometimes the car won't even start

I know that on my m42's, the throttle plate would get stuck occansionally. check it out. otherwise check the other things noted.

Is it possible that the throttle cable is sticking and just a coincidence that it came unstuck after you restarted the car? Is you gas pedal pretty stiff?

Gas pedal is not stiff and it moves freely.

This is what I have done. I took out the TMS ECU and put the stock one back on (thinking the chip me be bad after several jump starts, ect. (just trying to figure out by process of elimination). The shit wouldn't start until many attempts. Just when I thought the ecu had relearned everthing, I took it for a drive. Same thing..after several miles of driving, the rev gets stuck at 4,000rpm then eventually dies. I managed to get it home by restart, drive a few yards, konks out, do it all over again, until I got it home. So today I cleaned the ICV and the eratic revving is gone, but the check engine light is still on. I'm afraid to take it out the driveway.

Same thing is occurring. Only this time, the car starts and it idles pretty normal, then allof the sudden it would rev up and gets stuck at about 4,000rpm then the engine dies or I cut off the engine. Other times it would start, idle normally and then just cuts off. When it dies, it usually takes at least five tries before starting again. The intake bellow (that connects to the icv and afm) has some cracks in it, but it is not cracked all the way through. What else could be causing this problem?
