    2nd gear

    Hi.

My car is making this loud whistling noise on 2nd gear. It goes away when I shift to 3rd.

I think its coming from the mid of the car.. somewhere around the driveshaft or by the tranny…
any idea what could be causing this..?
    It started last night.

    TIA

    Cheers!

Is it kind of a 'whoo whoo' sound?

Mine does it too. It's either gear whine or a bad synchro. If the synchro is bad, it can also be tough to get into 2nd gear unless the revs are close to equal. Gear whine generally isn't an issue.

if the synchro's were bad you could just double clutch into 2nd...

I wonder if maybe you should check the transmission oil level.

BrewCity, no, they shouldn't make noise once they are in gear. The OP said this started suddenly, and that almost never happens with gear whine. I suppose it could be low on fluid.

Make sure you have gear oil! If you do and it's only a noise in 2nd, you most likely have a gear or bearing going bad, but chances are it will last a long time even if it's making noise. If you start getting funky vibrations along with the whine you might want to look for a used transmission.

BTW, gear whine in 1st and 2nd is fairly common on the big six powered cars, so is it possible you just started noticing something that has always been there?

I am not 100 percent sure on this, but I think 2nd geat is the first one to suffer because of low oil because it is higher in the case.
