can anyone confirm which way I should be spinning this large nut? There seems to be resistance spinning it either way....can't tell if i'm tightening or loosening it.

The nut is NOT reverse threaded.
With the nut held in place spin the steering wheel clockwise to tighten it.
If it's binding it may be dirty or cross threaded, I would undo the nut completely and clean all threads before retightening.

wouldn't that throw the steering wheel out of alignment by spinning the wheel itself?

            No.
The steering shaft is attached to the rack and column right?
When you turn one you turn the other.

He could take a socket and figure it out, I'm too lazy to take my cover off because mine doesn't rattle.

                    No problem!

The nut is 32mm, same as the fan clutch.
