The E32 is a sweet, sweet car. In a perfect world, I would still have one for longer trips.
(I got rear-ended in mine... car was totalled)
The self-leveling rear suspension isn't so bad. The struts are expensive so if you spring a leak it is not good. But adjusting it is easy and it provides a very nice ride.
Stay away from the V8 with the Nikasil engine (if there are any left out there). I had one and it ran fine, but it is still best to stay away from it. I had no electrical problems with mine at all. The heater stepper motors and flaps would break a lot and that gives some bad rep to all the electronics. They are a pain to fix... but all cars have those things.
The manual only came in the earlier 735's. Only a small number were imported to the US. You can do the conversion though and many have done so. The ZF 5HP30 transmission in both the 740, and 540 is a big, heavy and expensive piece of dog dooo. Do not get a car with that transmission in it. It was the first of the "no-service" transmissions and used liquid gold fluid. They usually failed between 75k and 120k miles on the car unless the owner had the fluid changed at reasonable intervals (most didn't because the fluid alone would cost you over $200). The automatic in the 735 is a fine transmission though.
The E32 will surprise you with its performance and its handling. It feels like a much smaller car. I can guarantee that 90% of the people on this board don't have a clue how far you can push an E32. Most of you would run out of skill way before the car would run out of ability. (that's not a slam, really, it is true for me too. On the track, the E30 would be marginally quicker in the corners, but the E32 would be faster on the straights.) The E30 is more tossable, for sure, but the E32 is also quite satisfying.
Anyway, it is a great car and a lot of fun. Mine gave me about 24mpg back and forth to work (with the v8) and me not being too easy on it.Last edited by Hallen; 11-20-2008, 10:00 PM.1987 E30 325is
