    Boneyard raiders

Remember when you could go to the junkyard and find replacement parts to fix your car? I do, wasn't too long ago. I like the web and Craigslist and even fleabay, but the downside is everyone thinks they're an entrepreneur. The yard I go to usually has about 7-10 e30s in it and they rotate out every couple of months. Recently I've been going and every instrument cluster is being ripped out. They're torn apart and tossed back in the car. I go to the yard next door and the same thing. This kind of crap pisses me off.

I know, I know, they have as much right blah, blah, blah. Still sucks for those of us who have the time and expertise to fix our cars for a reasonable cost. This guy buys the part at my cost and throws it up on his "Eruoslut" website for 10x as much. I'm standing in the boneyard with a bag of tools and my car still needing parts. If you're not in the yard within a couple of days the e30 arrives, it's stripped.
Too bad I dont drive a Galant or J30. Those sit for weeks untouched.

    Just venting, flame on.

I don't even see E30s in the boneyards around here.

Yeah, there are seriously a lot of people that go to the 'yards with a single flathead screwdriver, or a small hammer, just to pry stuff out and shred their way to possibly getting a part. They must wonder why they break stuff so often, with them not taking the screws out to get to things etc... Then again, not sure much is going on in their little brains...

Ive seen some nice mtech steering wheels destroyed because people thought they could break the steering lock, but instead bend the shit out of the wheel. I think a couple of them even had the key somewhere in the car!

I agree 100% when i started fixing my car, there was tons of shit at the junkers around here. Every time i went they had at least 2 different e30s. I went to one a couple days ago, and they had the same ones from 2 months before.

That's why I rarely ever go to the junkyard anymore, unless it's an emergency. When I was building Dodges, I'd see 10 hard to find parts I needed destroyed by someone else just to get at a part that was readily available at a parts store. They just didn't want to pay for a new one.

Yeah, it IS a junkyard, but you might as well get some practice removing something properly so you don't end up destroying your own car.

Most of the good recyclers I've been to are no longer self serve. They have a few mechanics on site that will remove whatever part you want.

I still find some decent stuff at the two junkyards I go to, but since the beginning, it does seem like less.

It seems like they're replacing E30s more slowly now. Maybe there's become so many less of them on the road that are being crashed or killed, or maybe enough people are actually maintaining them now?

I've noticed the cluster thing too. I was looking for a replacement i cluster for my e cluster and of the maybe 12 e30s I saw, only 2 still had their clusters. The rest pretty much shredded. Every part practically removable was removed.
                    Totally ridiculous.

From time to time a decent E30 will make it to the local pick-n-pull....it really depends on your timing and whether you'll find something you need. There's a few "BMW only" dismantlers around here who seem to scoop up nearly every wrecked Roundel in town. Some of their pricing for used parts exceeds new from an online vendor.

I agree its all about timing. If you're able to go early on weekdays sometimes you'll be able to intercept a fresh e30, and have your pick of the litter.

There are literally dudes that just wait around ALL DAY the pull a part south in Atlanta for certain cars to come in and strip for parts. Unfortunately, e30's have made their list. Freaking vultures..
