    In my opinion, it doesn't matter what E30 you get, as long as it's a 5-speed. (My error on choosing my car) :(

    Anyways, get an e30 that you will like, in both cosmetic, and mechanical condition. ie- if you want sport seats, plastic bumpers, and an m20 engine, go for that model e30 which has them in it.

    I can't really describe it, but now that I'm more experienced in e30's, I'd say the reasons I bought my car were bad. I wish I would've waited to find the perfect one that fits my needs. (5-speed, black, sport seats, 89-91 325i)

    edit: and now that I see it, I have all of the following wrong with my purchase (when I purchased it): Automatic, Bronzit, vinyl seats, sealed beams, diving boards, e engine. Heh. I'm just picky though.

        spencers is telling the truth.
        I waited and waited to find the perfect car for me, and it still ended up being short of my expectations. (DAMN those 89 iS's with all their bells and whistles :-))
        Make sure you get the color your want, get the bumper style you want, etc.
        Find out what the differences between the model years are, the specs on the engines, what you can do to each of them.
        The more research you do, the better.

          I agree with what everyone has been saying. Don't rush in all at once, take your time and find an E30 that meets all of your needs. I didn't worry too much about the sport seats or anything that can be changed easily like that but I made sure that I found a good condition, mechanically and asthetically sound car with the certain features that I was after.

          If you be patient and wait for the right one, you will be happy by the end of it. I know like many others I am!

            You must have a couple spoiled friend for them to own E30 M3's. As far as what car you purchase, as long as it's a clean E30, stick, with the options you like, who cares. The 318is is a amazing car for a 4 cyl, The 325i/is is very fun with a high revving inline 6 and even my Eta can be fun too, it's not horridly slow by any means. Narrow down the year and model E30[s] you like and keep an eye out for something good. There are good cars out there. I just got a clean 91 325i for $1500

                Hey, I am from Winston-Salem too. I just graduated from Reynolds and now am at UNCC. Do you go to RJR? Which E30 M3s are you talking about? I dont know of any 16 year olds in Winston with E30 M3s. There use to be 2 16 year olds with M3s, one with a built 2.5 and a dog-leg tranny. Him perhaps? If I were you I would get the more desired of the E30s which would be a 89+325is or 325i or get a 91 318is.

                  Hey yea i do go to reynolds...and yea this guy with the last name bostwick has one, and this other kid joey vrsecky or something like that has one...

                    The only thing i regret about my new 325i is the Autotragic, which will be going out the door as soon as funding permits.

                      You're smart for considering a 'lesser' E30. A 325 is a great car to start with. Reliable, fun, and plenty quick for a first car. Once you've got some miles under your belt (and perhaps some auto-xing or track school) then consider a more potent M3. Just be sure you have a good paying job or a trust fund to pay for the maintenance. I know several people who own these cars and they are not cheap.

                          There is only 1 e30 m3 at are school, if you are talking about another red e30 that is lowered and has an M-tech kit that is not an M3. I'm not going to get into 16 year old having M3's and fast cars and such, thats a whole nother story.

                                that reminds me.....didn't the brothers with two of the fastest E30s start with an eta and a M42?

                                that says something, doesn't it? no matter who you are, start with what you can handle and move up.
