Really depends. Vanilla is *the* kernel. And by that, I mean it's the one that Linux gives out. GCC (or GGC I don't remember) is a patched version of Vanilla. Love is a patched version of GCC.

But I think you probably mean what distro. I really enjoy the portage system of Gentoo (it picks up on dependencies and downloads them, installing packages is VERY simple). Gentoo is FreeBSD, but soo much better. It does take a LONG time to install, but it's basically custom compiled to match your computer.

Mandrake and SuSe are more user friendly versions. I started at FreeBSD (which is old school), moved to RedHat (no longer, but Mandrake and SuSe are the same thing) which runs off of RPMs (I'm not a fan), and then use Gentoo.
The BMW 318 is back. With a vengeance.

It's easy to change kernel _versions_ after you install your OS. Don't worry about it too much- just remember, the newer your computer, the newer a kernel you will most likely want, since it'll support newer hardware better.

        This only applies to Gentoo.

Leave Gentoo for later, when you know EXACTLY what you are doing. It's too frustrating otherwise. I would download knoppix from http://www.knopper.net/knoppix and run it from the cd. It's a little slow that way, but you get to play with it for a while before installing to the hard drive. When you want to install, you give the command "knx2hd" and it asks you a few questions. That's about it. Knoppix is based on Debian, which has an excellent package management system too. it's called APT. every so often i type"apt-get update && apt-get upgrade" and it checks for and installs new versions of practically everything I use. Oh, and btw, all of this package management stuff is great, unless you are on dial-up. then life sucks, Gentoo even worse because you are getting source code not executable programs (about 2-5 times as much volume). I am free to answer linux questions too, as are others I'm sure.. just email or pm. Having someone you can turn to should be #1 priority.
