What you would enjoy is a 13 button obc premium sound and an electric sunroof...

The 87 does have the newer motronics and a higher revving motor but the 86 has the bigger m20.

You should post pics so we can decide hehe
The es should have all that stuff like map light mirror, Premium sound, 13 button OBC, power sunroof, mirrors, windows, etc...

      At least mine did.

Get the is. Otherwise, put a chip and 3.73 LSD in the es

The stock es gets better MPG's, but is a bit of a slug compared to the is.

              IS.

I ended up with an 87es. It's a good car, and I don't really want either engine in stock form. But I'm sure the extra hp in the is (and almost equal tq) is more fun.

Remember though that the 2.5 liter has about the same amount of tq as the 2.7, it's just the 2.7 has a way different tq curve.

I'd get the eta if you are planning to modify it. Deck an 885 head and drop it on for a cheap stroker motor. Not exactly as simple as that, but close.

That said, it doesnt matter which you get. You should buy the nicer of the two.

For a toy with big power, go with the 325is and turbocharge it. You can safely make 300+ horsepower without touching the mechanical parts of the motor. That's assuming that the motor is healthy. With 250k, I doubt it is.

For a gas-mileage-getter the 325es will be better. Not as much fun.

For an economical rocket buy the nicer one and put in an S52.

Other than that, you might consider looking for a nice 318is. They get good gas mileage and are a lot of fun as well.

An "es" chipped with a 3.73 is a blast.

My 325is is a blast too, but neither is fast until swapped and/or boosted.

If I had money to spend, a '91 318is with the Downing/Atlanta SC kit sounds like a whole bunch of lightweight fun.

                        Oh yeah, welcome to R3V.

Yes and yes. I agree on both counts.

Chipped and a 3.73 will keep up with a 3.73 325is to 60ish...just as fun with better mileage

The 'is' has most likely been better maintained and so would be a better choice.... but at 250k i wouldn't want to rely on either of them without quite a bit of work.
