Old cars didn't have anywhere near the kind of safety features or material quality that the new ones have. All of that adds weight, it should be expected.

than lets talk new cars. the original z3s weigh, what, 2800lbs? i think they added and 700lbs worth of extra size and useless shit-n-gizmos.

the guys at bmw need to be hit with the 'if the car weighs less than the engine can be smaller and more efficient while still providing the same performance as a high powered motor' brick.

i also think it would be funny if bmw was actually trying to make room for a small roadster class. i bet they will end up only weighing a couple hundred lbs less than the regular ones. (aka 1 series vs 3 series)
