just put a cat on and be done with it..its not worth the trouble or the .000001% increase in HP that you get from runing striaght pipes on a stock car.
The magnaflow will clean as good or better than the stock unit, sound a little better, and keep money in your wallet.
for as much as you are going to pay for soeone to make you a bolt in straightpipe
it sounds really good with the mufflers in place of the cat/cats
Sort of... but then you have to drive it 20 miles, otherwise you cant smog it. You can also check into "O2 simulators" and using Spark plug non foulers to move the O2 sensor out of the exhaust stream, so it reads cleaner, as if there was a cat. Ive seen many guys do that with their straight pipes, since they use their track cars on the road occasionally.
Id go with Luke on this one.... I dont really see any performance or sound gains to make it worth the hassle. Just get a good high flow cat, even a stock cat, and you can get a nice cat back system for a good sound. I even had a 3 chamber flowmaster on my 84 318i, and it didnt sound too bad. Nice and quiet, with a little deeper sound.

just weld in the new cat and be done with it
AND more Internet misinformation is perpetuated!!!! STFU.
the truth is on a stock motor you probably wont see huge gains by removing your FACTORY cat. MAGNAFLOW aftermarket non high flow cats are crappy. they are cheap for a reason. the biscuit is small and takes a shit relatively quickly in my experience on lots of different cars.
if you are going to go the performance route on you car in the future, now is the time to get a magnaflow cat put on the car with flanges at either end of it and have the section made from 2" tubing. now it is still legal.
then go on line and find the muffler i gave you the part number for and buy it. the in and out on it are about 1" wider than the Magna flow cat.
as long as the people who do the cat section for you do not weld anything in place to join the tubing to each other (side by side), you can move the pipes apart the 1/2" per side to mount the replacement muffler. buy 4 2" flanges from the shop that you have so the replacement cat and 4 gaskets.
go home and measure the over all distance of the "flanged cat section". if they just welded the flanges to the ends of the cat the way it comes from Magnaflow, it is slightly shorter than Magnaflow MUFFLER.
trim a little off of the tubing on the muffler and remove the "cat section".
bolt the 4 extra flanges to the existing tubing on the car.
place the muffler in the space and line up the tubing with the tubing/flanges of the muffler.
* note if you have a welder, or access to one, tack the flanges in place then remove it and weld it up.
if you do not have any access to a welder....make SEVERAL marks that lead from the flange to the tubing of the muffler on each flange. these can be used to tell the muffler shop how you want the flanges indexed to the tubing. this will assure that it lines up properly when you get it back home.
TAKE IT TO A DIFFERENT MUFFLER SHOP to get the muffler and flanges welded together OFF OF THE CAR. by bringing them just the muffler THEY are not doing anything illegal and should have no problems welding it together for you.
go home and install your new quiet cat bypass and enjoy!
when you have to go through emissions, bolt the cat on, go through, pass and smile!
them go home and swap it back.
enjoy doing this for years to come.
when and if you put headers on the car you will have to modify the "cat section" in the front by removing the 3 bolt flanges and chopping a little length off at the front. no problem!
just go to the muffler shop again and buy 4 more flanges and 4 more gaskets and repeat the process at the front of the section where you had to shorten it for the headers. continue to enjoy for years to come.
you have now avoided having to EVER buy a NEW cat because it only see 20 or so miles each time it gets put on to go through inspection.
i hope this helps and clears things up for you.
