It seems to be an age thing rather than miles...

I have one that quit at almost 500K and one that just quit at 73K... Both 18 years old.

And this wasn't a problem when e30 was king (when they were 50% or better of the cars we worked on like 10 to 15 years ago)

my red '90i was an Arizona car before it came here for four years of 90-100+F summers and -10 winters, and odo was still cranking at 238k.

the white '87is I have now is still cranking at 234k, and has been a midwest car most (if not all) of its life.

Don't think it's the temp changes

Does anyone have a link to a place to get the replacement gears? I remember there was an Ebay seller, but he has not got back to me in the past month. Mine just died at 149k. PM me please. I would replace with another, but probably have same issue soon. I also seem to remember a thread about this with a link to a RC gear that works, etc, but cannot find it now.
          Thanks!!

This place is like catholic school, 2/3 of the students smoke weed on a daily basis, but the faculty seems to convince the outside world that drugs are just in the other schools, the resident pot dealer thinks he's cool because he has the originality to call anyone he doesn't like a homosexual, and most of the little children follow him like sheep, then there's the few with brains, you hardly ever hear from them, perhaps don't even know they exist, but they get all the sh!t done.

Its posted on the first page of the thread. The Ebay guy seemed like a decent seller when I contacted him he doesn't make Motometer gears.

The ODO on my old 325i went out at 168K and was in cali all of its life. I really think it has to do with the stress that is put on the gear when you reset the trip meter while in motion. They will definately last longer if you push the reset trip button when the car is stationary.

Agreed. Also, push the button gently - don't slam it.

I've put the Odometer Gears sets into 3 or 4 e30's now. All have operated flawlessly afterwards.

Well, posterity, you will never know what it cost us to preserve your freedom. I only hope that you will make a good use of it. If you do not, I shall repent in heaven that I ever took half the pains to preserve it.

I have 230k located in KC, MO. I wonder who out there has the most?

                          Anyone have a clue?

                          P.S. I don't mean to thread jack.

Did the OP fix his problem?
