    scary snow drive last night!

scary only because i could not see a THING at some points except a wall of white. I left carbondale, IL at about 7pm indiana time and didnt get here (plainfield, IN) until about 6.5 hours later (+2.5hours more than normal) due to the weather.

My fancy shmancy $47/each General Altimax Arctic snow tires certainly paid their way last night as the only thing that slowed me down was my (in)ability to see. I kind of felt sorry for the poor schlubs on normal tires i passed up (when i could see again), but then, nahhh.. ;-p

it never got to the point where i couldnt see where the edge of the road was (although it was close a few times) but this is exactly why i felt the need to buy the snows, in case i was out on a drive either to or from seeing my wife (shes in brain trauma rehab hospital 250miles from here) and got caught in a storm. (This is a trip i make at least once per month.)

my new hella H4/1 headlights did slowly lose some effectiveness as they iced up and i found some entertaining little ice rings built up around the wheel center caps (on bottlecaps).

at one point early on before it was snowing, traffic slowed to an absolute crawl and EVERYONE was in the right hand lane for some reason, flashing their hazard lights. it was a bit surreal blowing past them all as i was wondering what i was missing. the temps were at about 28deg and there was some moisture on the road but i never felt the car skidding around (snows are rated for ice too) so i just blew past them all.

even with the nice tires the weather still tacked an extra 2.5hours onto the trip which sucked a bit but alls well that ends well!

p.s. yes this is my first season in snow country :P

sounds like my drive back home about a month ago. Only there wasn't any traffic, so I was able to drive down the center of the freeway at about 30mph. Physically being able to go faster doesn't help when you can't see more than 5 feet in front of you and everything is the same color!

Sounds like fun. I heard the weather was awful; I was up in the Kendallville/ashley area while you were on the road.

Whenever I'm in conditions like that I get paranoid. I have confidence in my ability to drive in those conditions, but it seems like everyone else around here has no fucking idea how to drive; especially on the west side of the mountains.
