    The demand is greater. The majority of people that drive gas-powered cars can and have cut back on their driving when costs went up. Commericial shipping relies on diesel, and they can't just "cut back" on their transportation and stay in business. The demand stays the same. The production capability is lower in places like the US. There's a lot fewer diesel cracking plants than standard petrol plants.

      The small diesel engine used in cars and light trucks is doomed in the US market due to the cost of emissions controls to meet the much higher standards set by the EPA and CARB and the low cost of gasoline. These diesel engined BMWs will fail in America.
