I've only run into VG2 in states where they're illegal.

My dad and I were passing through VA one day and got the VG2 light a couple times before we remembered detectors were illegal there.

IF detectors are not illegal turn off VG2 detection. The problem is if the detection is on then your detector would shut off its receiver for a short while when it detects VG2. So you are driving blind for 20=30 seconds after being shot.

yeah and it pisses me off

ill be rollin down the freeway get a couple beeps, slow my ass down just in case, only to find its some dude tailgaiting my ass who also has a detector. Its times like those that I wish I had a V1. Ive got a whistler something or other that I got for 20 bucks at WalMart and it serves its purpose as long as its mounted high up on the windshield. Well at least well enough not to warrant 300 bones for a passport or 400 for a v1

How do cops detect a detector with the VG2 Signal? Since they have an oscillating current, all radio receivers not only pick up radio signals, they also emit them. This means that any radar detector, whether it has a jammer or not, broadcasts a tell-tale radio wave whenever it is turned on.

In areas where radar detectors are illegal, police may be equipped with a device called VG2. The VG2 instrument is simply a high-powered radio receiver tuned to the frequency of the signals emitted by radar detectors. So while you're scanning the area for them, they might very well be scanning the area for you.

However, most top-end radar detectors (Passport 7500/8500, V1) are immune to this signal. It is the new Spectre type detection that will play a role in states where radar and lidar detection is illegal, however it won't help worth a damn if you slam on your brakes as soon as the radar hits you.

I dont know about immunity because VG2 detection is an option on my Passport but since detectors are not illegal in KS I disabled it.

The VG2 mode just shuts off the receiver for a bit after catching it and then just keeps checking until it thinkgs its safe. I would have to think that the detector-detector has to be active in some way for the detector to notice it.

I usually get what looks like a weak or false about a mile before I get shot so I can slow down. The only two times I didnt get a warning signal and they hit me with instant instead of slowing down I just got off the highway before they got moving (both times I was going to fast to slow down).

On the open road I always get what looks like a false a mile before I get the full signal as they get near.

V1 and Passport 7500/8500/8500X50 all have VG2 detection, but the way that the actual detector mechanism works does not create a field that is detectable with the VG2 method.

screw all that, get a scanner withan alert freq that searches cop radio trunking and alerts you to them with a 3 mile radius. I used this with a K40 with success when I lived in California. The only time I ever got a speeding ticket was when I was in the 57 Bel Air, which did not have any of that.

Uniden is the most widely used, I have a few though. I have 3 Pro Channels from Radio Shack which are self-programmed, a Uniden Bearcat Sportcat that I keep in my pickup along with my Ham Radio for storm chasing, and then I have 3 Uniden Bearcat 895's as well.
The Uniden I use to use was called a "beartracker". You could only program about 25 of your own frequencies, but it came pre-programmed and had the latest freq's the cops use. It's the one with the alarm on it like a radar detector. The newest version of it is EXCELLENT. And it's like $172

My recommendation is a sportcat with 100 channels. It's small, and portable and has great range on it or this new model beartracker.

So, how does it alert you ... ?

it senses the radio mobile extender used in police radios basically, it senses the 'receive" end of a repeater and alerts you just like a radar detector with a warning beep or light.
