    This is Broken Parts...

I just wanted to see some pictures of E30 parts that are really broken. It can be parts worn from normal use or parts broken from accidents. I just want to see broken stuff, as long as it if from an E30.

My U Joint crapped out on the previous owner. It fixed it shortly after I bought the car. It actually sounded pretty mean. Way better sound than any muffler could make.

I'm swapping my intake manifold and throttle body, and when I took the crankcase breather hose off the top of the intake manifold, it was so brittle, it broke in half like a piece of plastic.

I still like the guy who bought an e30, got to looking at it and discovered he had an "invisible guibo".

I was driving the old e28 one day and while shifting into second the upper shift lever separated from the lower. I was able to get off the road and I found this when I pulled the boot.

It seems some one previous to me had tried (for some reason), to separate the two and ended up mauling the shit out of the aluminum. You can see how the ridge is flared outward so the ring was no longer held securely in the groove.

When I pulled the motor out of my E30, there was a hole all the way through the block.

If lucky, the E36 will die peacefully, in its natural habitat, and be given the prestigious honor of donating its parts to an E30

I thought this was truly messed up... so I look down @ the starter that refused to start my car about 2 weeks ago and what do I see?

                    (click pictures for detail)

... so I unplugged everything on the front side and removed the dipstick. The motor came out w/ no ratchets or wrenches.

I threw in a used starter I had in the garage.

The "luke skywalker getting electrocuted" noise I heard probably was not electrical at all.. it was the starter jumping around under its own rotation.

                    Top bolt: missing
Bottom bolt: still in the hole, holding the severed piece of starter motor base

                    Here is the starter, removed:

                    I blame loose bolts.
I think the top bolt must have come out first. Under all of the chugga-chugga-chugga cold/sub-zero starts, the bottom bolt/bracket was under a lot of stress, the metal was ice cold, and when the bottom bolt loosened it made the entire motor jackhammer itself away from the bolt.

                      ... and raise you mine.

my starter did something like that a couple of weeks ago

the top bolt was GONE and the solinoid screws had backed off almost all the way
