Why are you doing a 325 flywheel when you can do a M40, which would be pressumable cheaper?

oh and they Chilton (18400) covers the m42, but its american/canadian and not a good book IMO

      325i clutch is 228mm while a 318i is 218mm

Much better to get a 325i one. i'd be suprised if it was considerably more expensive.

M40 is non-existent in the US market. so it'snot and option for the US M42 enthusiast.

I have my M40 flywheel lighten about 1kg when I had the clutchset changed.

Fabianyee, do you know the weight of the M40 flywheel? I assume that this is a straight-swap for the M42 requiring just the clutch/flywheel/p-plate/throwout, or do other parts need to be swapped as well? The M20 flywheel requires a euro 323 starter pinion, etc, so it's nice to know that there are other flywheel options for the 16v.

mjc85, as the others mentioned, it would probably be best to pickup the E30 Bentley manual, and maybe even the E36 manual. Check out BP's site for specs and tech articles.

another option is to get the shady BMW TIS CDs from eBay.

How are the chilton manuals, does anyone actually own one?

Get the Bentley for general E30 info. Surprisingly, the Chilton's manual has some decent M42 information.

I'm surprised no one has said this:
Get the Bentley E36 manual for the M42 engine.
Get the Bentley E30 manual for everything else.
That's the price you pay for owning a BMW that was only sold for one year in the U.S.
