ok so here is what i think im going to do:
1. take the oilpan off, take the oil pickup tube out and see if i can see anything lodged in there.
2. get ahold of another cam and carrier, put them in in the near future.
check the valve cover again after a little driving with the new cam and see if the damage is still happening
any ideas?/ideas on where i could get a cam ASAP??

So you're gonna drive it like that? Be aware that those cams are hollow and it looks like you lathed off a good bit of metal. I'm sure you know what happens when the cam breaks.
See M42club.com or here for parts. Someone on there should have one.

yes i do understand that. but i discovered this problem right after a 500 mile tahoe trip. so i think she can last a little longer. ill see what i find in the oil pan, feeder tube and get back to you guys a little later.

ok people,
got the oil pan off, got the feeder tube out, found a dime sized leaf up against the screen...would this be enough to cause the carnage to the front intake cam bearing?
i didnt find really any metal shavings in the pan
or should i try and look further up the tube into the block...

That shouldn't be the cause since the screen is much bigger than the size of a dime.

I had this problem with an Audi I was working on. His pickup screen was clogged with sludge which wore out the front cam journal. Anywho when i got the oil pressure back and ran the car with the valve cover off. Metal shavings were pouring out of the worn journal.First: 1984 318i
