    Cherokee or Grand Cherokee

I'm having a really difficult time deciding on what I want as a daily driver. I've sort of decided on a Jeep, because I want the hauling capacity of an SUV and the ability to actually be able to have passengers in my back seat. Oh, and 4WD for the Midwest winters.

Here are a couple of Jeeps I'm looking at.
The Cherokee is a '99 I-6 with 140,000 miles (mostly highway used by a cell tower construction company). The Grand Cherokee is a '96 V8 with 131,000 miles. Both are within $500 of each other.

    Grand Cherokee Pros:
    Plush leather interior :D
    Power everything :D
    Climate control :D

    Grand Cherokee Cons:
    less reliable :(
    sloppier steering :(

    Cherokee Pros:
    Classic exterior :D
    Newer :D

    Cherokee Cons:
    blan, truck like interior :(
    No ABS :(
    AM/FM radio only :(

    Please help me decide :?

Here are pictures of each, might take a few seconds to come up though...

For the record, I'll never buy another white car.

I'd say go w/the Grand Cherokee if you want to be comfortable in your DD.

Neither, I can attest to them being a uncofortable in the back seat due to it's to small in both models. They are the same chassis length and the back door for an average 6 footer is a pia to get in and out of.

Honestly if you need the room look at getting a mini van with winter tires. A older Honda or Toyota less maintance and useable space.

I would take a ZJ over a XJ anyday!

Coil Springs at all corners with the ZJ
Leave springs in the rear on the XJ

The 4.0 is bulletproof, but the V8 will help with towing. Also keep in mind braking when towing.... ZJ!

My mother in law had a V8 Grand Cherokee Laredo and it was terribly unreliable and lousy on gas. Of the two, I'd take the Cherokee even though its a bit dated. You can always add a nice stereo.

OK, show of hands.... who all is up on the XJ Cherokee vs. ZJ Grand Cherokee debate? Really? Keep in mind there are two ('05 will make 3) types of Grand Cherokees, the ZJ 93-98 and WJ 99-04. The model pictured is a ZJ. The ZJ is the more desireable model. The WJ is simply an over-grown station wagon.

My roommate has an 4.0 XJ, and got a truck for towing. I have a 4.0 ZJ and the gf has a V8 ZJ. Trust me, the ZJ is the one to pick.

As far as mpg.... the difference between the 4.0 and V8 is not worth worrying about. They are BOTH bad.

My dad's got a '94 Grand Cherokee that he bought new and has had alright luck with. I'm 6'3" and am comfortable in it, even in the back seat. Is there that much different about them, undercarriage wise, that would make them more problematic than the Cherokee? My roommate had a '94 also, but with a V8, and it had 185,000 miles on it when he sold it...because the tranny was acting stlightly funny sometimes.

My dad owned both the ZJ and WJ. His ZJ was a '95 Grand Cherokee Limited (gold with tan interior, 4.0 L I6). The thing was a basket case. We had continual transmission problems with it, it constantly warped brakes, the A/C compressor went out, and towards the end of ownership, the engine started idling like crap.

My dad had a love/hate relationship with it.... and conseqently traded it in for a '99 Grand Cherokee Laredo (black w/ charcoal interior). The WJ rode much smoother (far more refined suspension), the wind noise was less, engine was quieter and more refined, and the interior was of far better quality. We also had fewer problems with it. It warped the brakes once, and one of the seals on the axles leaked. All in all, a much better SUV on road, with no comprimise off road. My dad never did any hard core offroad (it was his daily driver). But, he did get them muddy when he went out to construction sites to inspect, and I'm fairly certain he had a little fun with it there.

PS. I-6 gas mileage is nothing to write home about, and probably only marginaly better than the V8. In both GC's, my dad was lucky to get 16 mpg in the city. Usually 15, and sometimes 14.

Cherokee gets my vote. The Grand Cherokee is a soccer mom car, sorry.
The BMW 318 is back. With a vengeance.

my Dad drives an older Cherokee and other than floaty steering Id take the Cherokee over a Grand Cherokee any day of the week. Both cars are going to be the same reliability wise, Id go with the 4.0 I6. Those motors are bombproof when well maintained. The transmissions are another story but Im sure you already know this. Also, be ready to pay out the ass in gas. My pops Cherokee is about the only thing worse on gas than my pathfinder and its no fun. Your going to be in for a serious suprise when you go from fillin up the es to fillin up the SUV.
