Ok so I wanna sell my car to buy an e39

and get a 540 with a 6 speed. Ive seen a few on c/l in the price range I want. Ive never driven one yet whats the power like on them? at 3700 pounds with 282hp I dont think it would be to impressive but I like the look of the E39. I guess im just trying to find a general opinion of the e39

They go nicely and the maintenance work can get expensive.

theyre fun. I had some experience with the smaller displacement 530i (sport 5spd) which moved for what it was. Maintenance is comparable to the e39 M5 from what i hear. when things go wrong they are super expensive to get fixed. its not like wrenching on an M20. i would personally love to have one as well but buck up the extra $$ for a better car. (low miles, service history ect ect). GL! :)

OK... I need a family car now so i wont be hammering on it all the time. But I still need something to have fun in.

get the wagon. I have a 740il (which has the same engine) and working on it is quite frustrating.

I was specifically thinking of the intake reseal job, but everything on the motor will be more expensive than a comparable 6-cylinder model (to be expected, of course). Lots of plastic stuff breaks, as is typical of later model BMW's, but the 540i has more plastic things that can go, mostly the little vacuum nipples around the intake, especially the one on the oil separator on the back of the manifold.

Just thought it was worth a mention. I've done a lot of high $$ jobs on those V8's.

                          I love E39 540i/6
such a classic design. theyve dropped so much in price, ive been tempted to sell my E30 and get one too.
