it started out as a yakuza trend, the gangters would put little steel pales with the insignia of thier gang painted on it on thier towhooks, as a way to establish who they were rolling for, like a red and blue of the bloods and crypts, and over time, this trend grew more popular, and was adapted by many drifters, and now, we have towhook toys, dont ask me how i know this, i cant help it, im full of small trivia crap like this
