Nice car! lots of potential. As for mods don't bother with the cai it doesn't do a thing. The supersprint does help, unless my old oem system was plugged. The SS sounds just like stock but slightly deeper. It fits like oem and looks sweet. The JC chip is also worth the money, the car pulls nice from 4k till 7k. I'd do the suspension before you get into cosmetics, but that's my opinion.

....what about a dinan chip? anyone use one of these in an M42? ...i know you cant tell from the pictures but the paint is shit. the edge of the door looks like it hasd been opened more than once into cement, the clearcoat is chipping at the rear window seam, there are various small cracks in the hood (the paint), the tint job sucks, there is a dent in both front fenders (bondo ), and another dent on the roof, the are two more dents under the raer right tailight.....the list goes on my freinds.
im a perfectionists and it needs to be perfect. if it wasnt for the dumb ass previous owners maybe the body wouldnt have been so neglected and i wouldnt have to paint it.

oh one more Q: does anyone have H&R springs with bilstien sport shocks on their 318is? i really dont want to change the stock setup(M-technic suspension) but it looks really gay right now cause' its too high.

i have a set of h&r 35mm drop springs (for 318is), if you are interested........ they wont dump the car... sounds to me these would be right for your application.

looks fairly nice. I'll cast my vote in favor of the supersprint exhaust. Most people are just turned off by the price.

after lots of reviews on engine upgrade for the m42, I have come to conclusion that it would be a waste of money to mod the engine.

Id much rather dump all the money into the suspension components, and cosmetic stuff. Although the supersprint exhaust looks nice on the 318s, I wouldn't ever get it purely for looks.
I've decided that Im pretty happy with the m42, but when I have the time and money (next summer) i'd want to drop a 6 banger in it.

Not here. I hate extra weight.

Also, avoid Dinan chips. The only reputable chip for the M42 is the Jim Conforti chip. Or the MarkD chips in the works (the E.A.T. Chips seen as an ad on top of this page probably)...

I dunno about you guys but in my 325ic I'm consistently getting 29-30 MPG, even with some spirited runs.
