    What does a 4000lb e30 look like?

    This:

The autocross course was actually set up for these. 50" wheelbase, 40" track, ~350 lbs with ~65 hp. As you can imagine, they are much easier to fit between the cones.

But at the end of the day I though, 'hell, why not. let's give it a try'. So even though my car weighs 10x more, and is twice as wide and more than twice as long, we through 4 people in it and had fun. FYI the gates were ~8ft wide, the slalom cones ~12ft apart, and my car barely fit through the tighter corners.

Then, I gave the wheel over to Bill, our professional racing driver. He's had a steering wheel in his hands since he was 5. If anything is more brutal on a car than being flung around the world's tightest auto-x, with 4 people and a batshit fast driver, I don't know what is. But my baby handled it with poise and grace, never setting a wrong foot and only taking out 3 cones over the course of 6 or 7 laps.

This being my first (and probably only) autocross, I can say without a doubt that the Mason x-brace is god's gift to cabrio owners. Tied with the massive 25/22mm IE sways and e36 steering rack, this things handled like a champ and never put a foot wrong. I was thrilled, and she walked away without a single incident, breakdown or otherwise.

no helmets in an open top car? we'd never get away with that here.

car looks nice. for some reason I always pictured a bronzit diving board car on bottlecaps and 4x4 height. :p

Yeah, how do they let you out with no helmets on anyone?

Our autox track is 8 ft. wide period. If you go past that 8 feet your in the grass.

Especially in a cabrio. That's some serious safety issues. Not that I don't trust your driving, nor am I downplaying the other driver's skills, but I NEVER would have gotten in a cabrio on an auto-x course without a helmet on.

Looks like a fun day, though! Car looks great.

those are formula SAE's, build one on a college budget, especially when chief sponsor is General Motors.

Well, there are 2 formula cars pictured. The first is all finished and has CF bodywork and a nice paint scheme, it looks amazing. The second one is not finished in the slightest, this was it's maiden voyage since even being completed. It still needs radiator ducting, paint, etc... to be finished.

The reason no one was wearing helmets is because this was a personal event. Our team rented an old airstrip, set up a course, and had fun. There was no sanctioning body or competition, just me and some buddies. No auto-x club will let you run without a roll bar, let alone helmets.

Besides had the car rolled over (nearly impossible, mind you. I've never seen or heard of it.), a helmet wouldn't do shit to save your life, especially in the back seat.

You've never seen or heard of a car rolling at an auto-x event? We had a car roll here 2 years ago.

And as far as a helmet not doing shit to save your life, try telling that to Richard Hammond.

Being in a car with a rollcage, and being in a car with no top are a bit different.

I'm sure in a 'vert there is a good chance of a helmet saving your head but not preventing your neck from shattering into 8 million pieces as thousands of pounds crush it in one direction.

But I'm still with you, helmets do save lives. My Shoei X-11 saved me on the track when I bounced my head off the ground at 65 and ended with a horrendous concussion and post concussion syndrome.
