    A long thanksgiving break......

So i haven't been very active on the forums lately, i have been super busy with school and my engineering projects. My alternator started to go a little bit ago, and i was due for a timing belt as i was approaching 300,000 miles on the old m20. So i said what the hell lets put a new motor in. HAHA do not attempt a motor swap in 30 hours with only three days to do it in. Long long long story short a few lady gaga tracks later. The motors in everything is hooked up beautifully.... accept my rear brakes don't work master cylinder was toast..... Thanks to mossman should be all good by next week. Motor works beautifully.

    1993 525 M50 110,000 miles
    1995 M3 Transmission 95,000 miles
    IX Brake Booster.
e28 Master cylinder, getting trashed and replaced with M3 master cylinder
Brand new sachs clutch and all.

Started taking everything out on thanksgiving day. Both my buddy and i were relaxed lots of coffee brewing and lots of snacks.

Got the motor out, got the new motor in and everything was good We left it ready for the drive shaft and lsd to be put in.

After break friday we got back ontop of everything on Saturday about 5pm. We spend the next 24 hours working on every little detail. After wrestling with the breaks for way to long i said fuck it ill drive it anyways. So thats were i am at. I should be putting a new master cylinder in this weekend.

    A heartless car.

It was totally worth all of the work. Drives like a dream. A video is soon to come stay tuned.

            Should be 16s

            205s is my guess.

            help me understand.

            stock m20 is 169 hp

            stock m50 is 189 hp

does the 20 extra ponies really make that much of a difference?

is it just the vanos that makes it better?

i believe there is a difference, i'm just trying to understand the science behind it.

i'm sure a few horses died in the 300k mileage although one wonders whether that m20 was rebuilt at some point.

            thx

its not all about power (although 189 is over 10% more than 169). the powerband is better, and the motor is lower maintenance as well.

Timing belt vs. timing chain and don't have to worry about breaking rocker arms.

The BBS RXes are 17x7.5" with 215/45 rubber on them. Offset is 35 with a 10mm H&R Trak spacer to make everything fit. I know this because they're mine. :-)

Talk about a hell of a weekend! These projects are never quite as simple as they seem but on the bright side, I helped RedStar get everything in there (it was my motor and my shop as well...) so when the time comes to put my new car together I get free slave labor! I shot some video of the install, once I get some footage of the car on the road I'll get it edited up and post it.

The motor was never rebuilt. 20 horses is a lot and that's in stock configuration. This motor will doubtfully stay stock for long as there are plenty of bolt-ons available that make a noticeable difference, far more then on an M20.

I first saw this motor five years ago in KangamangusDriver's 318i and he embarrassed me pretty well on the highway heading to a meet at Bav Auto. I had 200k M20 with intake/exhaust/Mark D and thought I was doing pretty well until his car came along and pulled away from me like I was standing still. Sadly that car met it's demise at the hands of careless driver (T-boned, drivers side, everyone was ok though) and was damaged beyond reasonable repair. It sat for awhile along with a new shell that Adam had intended to swap his parts into but life and family eventually took over and I picked up his collection when I went deer hunting in my white car. I parted out the 318 and the motor obviously found itself a happy new home and the other shell he had is now getting paint and eagerly awaiting the installation of my S50.

There is a reason why BMW changed the m20 motor to the m50 motor. From an engineering stand point it is a vastly large technological upgrade. Not only does the power increase but i no longer have a timing belt to worry about. This is not a race car its my daily driver.

Plus the m50 in a e30 just sounds so good.
