    Rev Limiters??? Now with pics!

Hi all im new to the site, Recently i bought a 325e, but unlike most etas it doesn't stop at 4 1/2 grand the tacho shows the redline starting at 6 1/2 so i assume it has had an engine swap. Anyways to the point, When i was taken for a test drive he said the car doesn't stop when you hit 6 1/2 grand or even 7, so i asked if he could show me, waiting for something to explode, but true enough it hit 7 thousand and the needle stoped but the car kept pulling, so i was wondering whether any of you have taken out your limiters or whether you feel safer leaving them in. Since then i have purchased the car, I dont take it to 7 but i do enjoy opening her up! Also is there anyway to identify what engine i am running? Numbers on block ect?

    Cheers Mark
BTW Be aware dial up users!! I warned you sorry havn't had a chance to change size!
    No engin pics sorry!

Sounds like somebody put a i tach face on your car most likely.

Does your valve cover say BMW or have the BMW roundel?

That would only work if they changed the tach face, but didnt swap electronic stuff right? Cus if they swapped the plug from the 'i' cluster, the tach would read correctly. Otherwise, it might show he is around 6k, but really its only around 4k. Correct?

I think if you were to install an i cluster by just plugging it in and not changing the coding plug it will just give a inaccurate reading.

I left my tach in from my 85 318i when i did my swap to the eta. it will run all the way to the redline at WOT before it shifts (slushbox) it still has the same rev limiter. My dad said i need to put the right coder plug in for it to read as a six cylinder.

                  Super etas cutoff at 5500.

Clusters are interchangable from the "i" to the "e".... and no it will not read correctly. If you have an "i" cluster in an eta.... it'll show you at 6000 rpms when you are at 4500rpms.

Correct. If you don't reuse the eta's coding plug or coding chip (depending on the year), then it will be read somewhere around 6k but be at 4k like you said.

i thought that the tacho would be reading the same thing. 4grand would be exactly that. what ever cluster your using, including aftermarket ones.

what speed are you doing at 6k rpm in say first or second?

how fast are you going at past 7k rpm? if its not into at least the 40mphs, you're not really at 7k rpm.

hey sorry for late reply, when in first at about 61/2 k it sits at about 50 - 55 kph so i dunno what that is in mph? but second is a bit sorter like 85 at same revs also when i bought the car was told the diff was rebuilt but to unkown specs? could have something to do with it! Anyways i just love to drive it(Pulls heaps of looks and sounds tuff, will find out more about the engine when i am gonna spend some good money on it!! :) ) and thanks for all you feedback has been very helpful!

                          Cheers Mark

Hey man cool car - Can u take a pic of the engine? You can tell what engine it has by looking at the inlet manifold. Its possible its still the 2.7 Eta but has been given a chip to let it rev to 7000 rpm.

you wouldnt want to go higher than that as youll break the rockers, whether its a 325e engine or a 325i.

Also, have a look at www.eurocca.net for some local's with bmw's

PS< gotta loose that M3 badge as well . .

a 2.7eta is definitely NOT going to rev to 7k without breaking. Single valve springs are what limits this (in a nutshell) correct?
