if its a street car, go with Bilstien sport/H&R Race setup. its what I have and its great for the street. However, i am a track junkie (or would be if i had moar $$$) so i am sweating after some coilovers.

And as far as a swap, in my opinion, the S50 is the BEST swap for an E30. The motor is lighter than the M30 and puts out significantly more hp. (240 vs 208 )

But i would second the motion to first do wheels and suspension. There is nothing better for a well-balanced 318is than to upgrade the handling capabilities on an already capable car. Handling is the strong point of the 318is.

and do spend time on www.m42club.com, there is vast amounts of M42 knowledge over there that only can get barely touched on here in the R3V M42 subforum.
They are about the same weight dude...and if you were going through the trouble might as well do an s52 / obd1, get the best motor you can afford. S54s are dropping in price as well, so to say s50 is the best motor is a little iffy.

I'm pretty sure its 20 all around with 30 on the entire windshield. The windshield tint makes it sooo much cooler in the summer

Well I think he was saying that the s50 would be the best motor because it is light, it is powerful, and there is no obd1 swap required, making it easier on a beginner. And also, wouldn't a S54 be quite difficult?

Don't forget to get a clutch stop, One of the best mods for the e30 cars. I still need to pick one up.

keep the m42 and upgrade it. doesn't have much straight line speed but through the bends its a winner... plus 318is are becoming rare.

Behind your clutch pedal in the carpet there is a whole, This is where it is installed, What it does is eliminate the dead space in the clutch, once the clutch is open, there is still 1.5" of travel, This eliminates it.

They are no more than $20, and you can make one yourself. I actually just ordered one.

Where did you get that stop?
I hate the excessive travel in the pedal!

I drove an E30 with that gay useless clutch stop, it was about the most annoying vehicle I have ever driven since my dad's 1987 Ford F-250 N/A diesel 4-speed manual with shot synchros.

but then again, he had it adjusted so that the clutch barely disengages once the pedal hit the stop, and getting started was a huge pain, because I would instantly stall out, since I couldn't "feel" when the clutch started to grab.
